Tyler Technologies — Munis & adjacent ERP suite

Tyler Munis is the dominant North-American municipal ERP — finance, HR, payroll, utility billing, tax. When it's down, you feel it everywhere.

Reporting path

  1. Open a Tyler Support case at the customer portal and flag it as Security / Incident — these route to Tyler's CIRT rather than general support.
  2. Phone Tyler Support 1-800-772-2260 (US) and ask for the on-call security contact.
  3. Email Tyler's product-security inbox in writing for an evidentiary record; do not rely on a single phone call.
  4. Notify your municipal cyber-insurance carrier in parallel — Tyler does not coordinate with your carrier on your behalf.

Contract clauses to read first

  • Look for the breach-notification clause. Most Tyler municipal contracts now require 72-hour vendor notification once Tyler determines a customer is affected.
  • Read the data-ownership clause — your municipality should be the data controller regardless of Tyler hosting.
  • Confirm the export-on-incident clause exists; you should be able to demand a full data export within a defined timeframe.
  • Confirm indemnification covers your statutory notification costs (state AG fees, mailing, credit monitoring).

Known incident pattern

Tyler disclosed an internal compromise of its own corporate network in 2020, and several Tyler-hosted customer environments have been individually breached over the years — most recently affecting small US municipalities. Tyler publishes a status page; subscribe and route alerts to your CAO and IT lead.
